Use Twitter from Airtel number:
sms 'Start' without quotes to 53000 and follow the steps. Sms charges 1 Re/sms.
Receiving the tweets of the people you follow is free. But tweeting is 1 Re/sms.

To tweet via moble if you don't have an Airtel sim
Send an sms 'REGISTER <twitter username> <twitter password>' to any of the following nos:
  • 09220092200 (Mumbai)
  • 09243000111 (Bangalore)
Start tweeting by sending a message, 'TWT <your message>' to any of the above nos.
Here STD rates would be applied for each sms.

I would suggest use Airtel number to get the tweets of people you follow and the second step to tweet your status as there are many plans available in which national rates is free or cheap.
